Chiho Aoshima
CHIHO AOSHIMA (b 1974)
The Japanese artist, Chiho Aoshima, was born in Tokyo and graduated from the Department of Economics at Hosei University. Her artistic career began when she joined Takashi Murakami’s studio.
She has developed her own personal approach to “superflat”. This important art movement is concerned with how Japanese culture has evolved since the Second World War. It draws on both traditional approaches to printmaking and scroll painting and on popular culture, such as manga comics, television, video games and animation. This preoccupation with contemporary culture has led to superflat being described as “post pop art” and a “descendant of pop art”.
Aoshima produces intensely detailed and complex prints which include beautiful landscapes and depict strange worlds, often populated by supernatural creatures and young women.
As well as works on paper, she has experimented with printing on canvas bags, leather and plastic.
Aoshima has also produced large murals, most notably at Gloucester Road tube station in London and for the New York City Transit System.
She has held solo shows in Japan, France, the United Kingdom and the USA and her work is held in several public collections.
