ALLEN JONES R.A. ( b 1937)
Born in Southampton in 1937, Allen Jones studied painting and lithography at Hornsey College of Art between 1955 and 1959. Between 1959 and 1960, he studied at the Royal College of Art. This was a golden period for the college and his contemporaries included David Hockney, Derek Boshier, Patrick Caulfield, R.B. Kitaj and Peter Phillips. Jones exhibited with these artists at the landmark “Young Contemporaries” exhibition held in February 1961 which “launched” many of these “Pop” artists. Exhibitions in San Francisco and New York were soon to follow. He taught lithography at Croydon College of Art (1961-1963) and drawing at Chelsea School of Art during 1964. Jones lived in New York between 1964 and 1965 and toured the USA extensively with fellow artist, Peter Phillips. Thereafter he has held a number of teaching posts in Los Angeles , Tampa ( Florida ), Hamburg , Berlin and elsewhere. Allen Jones has exhibited in major galleries throughout Europe, America and Asia .
Printmaking has played a central part in Jones' output since he learned lithography in the late 1950's. His work appropriates its imagery from the worlds of advertising and erotic magazines. It is characterized by fine draughtsmanship and a smooth, sensual line, ideally suited to the erotic and often stylized subject matter. His imagery also derives from his interest in psychology (particularly the work of Freud, and Jung) and the philosophy of Nietzsche.
